~70~

This year (2019) Cleveland Surgical Society is Celebrating 70 years!  The society continues to thrive thanks to the accomplishments of members and leaders past, present, and future.

Membership allows general and general-subspecialty surgeons in the Northeast Ohio area to connect and stay current on topics that are important to all of us.  Our resident presentations in the “Stump the Stars” night and the resident paper competitions provide rich engagement of the next generations of surgeons who will serve locally and perhaps nationally and globally.

Dr. Donald Glover was the first president of the Society in 1949.  Dr. Glover was the Chief of Surgery at St. Luke’s Hospital (Woodland Ave, closed now but on the register of Historic Places), and was a surgeon in the Korean War Conflict.  Just a few of Dr. Glover’s contributions to the American Journal of Surgery include:

“Fifteen years of the tannic acid method of burn treatment” (1941)

“Persistent omphalomesenteric duct:  Incidence relative to Meckel’s diverticulum" (1952)

“Marjolin’s ulcer: A preventable threat to function and life" (1949)

Over the past 70 years, the contributions to the fields of general and general subspecialty surgery by Cleveland Surgical Society members is practically innumerable.  As we reflect on the years and decades past, we invite you to submit any items to share with our membership, in this newsletter, on our website, or at our meetings.
