~~~A Message from our President~~~
Happy new year!
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed our recent “stump the stars” event at a new society meeting location - the Great Lakes Brewery Co.
This past calendar year demonstrated to be a strong year for the Cleveland Surgical Society with a robust membership and fantastic meeting attendance and industry support.
We continue to strive to offer a fantastic venue for Resident education and national surgical leaders as our invited guest speakers.
I am personally  looking forward to the society’s highlighted conference – the annual resident essay contest – to be held in March of 2020.
Thank you again for all of your support and I’m looking forward to a successful year in 2020.
Tony Capizzani MD FACS
Local area residents "Stump the Stars"
January 7 was a night to remember for several area surgery trainees. Drs. Caitlin Finelli (CCF South Pointe), Abbie Christiansen (CCF Akron General), Justus Phillip (CCF Akron General), and Michael Klingler (CCF Main Campus) each presented unusual cases that had the entire room on the edge of their seats.
The panel of Stars included Dr. Jeffrey Ponsky, Dr. Ajita Prabhu, and Dr. Jordan Winter.   Several past presidents of Cleveland Surgical Society were also present in the audience and provided valuable input on the cases.
Dues for Active Members are $250 calendar year beginning January 2020
For years The Cleveland Surgical Society has followed the traditional “academic year” of July to June for its programming and assessment of dues. The usual final meeting of the year is in May culminating with the Resident Essay Contest. Payment of dues in the Fall of the preceding year often led to confusion to the extent of dues coverage the following year especially when some members paid dues in the Spring prior to the final meeting.
Beginning January 2020, annual dues will be assessed for the calendar year January 1 through December 31. Dues notices will be emailed beginning December 1, 2019. Dues can be paid through the Society website by signing into the member portal, by the Society PayPal link, by check sent to the Society treasurer or at any of the Society meetings by credit card.
A Look Back
Dr. Carl Hamann (26 Jan. 1865-12 Jan. 1930), dean of Western Reserve University Medical School (1912-19) and visiting surgeon at Charity and City hospitals (1896-1930), was born in Davenport, Iowa, to Claus H. and Marie Koenig Hamann. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School with a M.D. in 1890. Hamann was a resident physician at Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia (1890-91) and assistant demonstrator of anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania (1891-93) before coming to Cleveland in 1893 as professor of anatomy at WRU Medical School, additionally establishing a private practice. In 1912, he was appointed dean and professor of applied anatomy and clinical surgery and is credited with helping build the school into one of the world's finest medical centers. As founder of the Hamann Museum of Comparative Anthropology at the medical school, he devoted much time to preparing, recording, and mounting materials he gathered for his anatomical teaching museum. Hamann was reputed to have done more charity practice than any other physician in the city. He performed over 10,000 operations, and even in his later years would perform up to 20 a day. For many years he shared the administrative burden for the department of surgery at Charity Hospital with Dr. FRANK BUNTS. With Bunts's death in 1928, Hamann shouldered the entire burden until he was struck with heart disease shortly before his own death. Hamann married Ella F. Ampt in 1900 and had 2 children, Carl A. and Elizabeth Marie.
Dr. Carl A. Hamann Jr. was a founding member of Cleveland Surgical Society.
